Rakaia Gorge Walking Track

This track was constructed on some pretty tricky steep terrain and less than ideal surface types, which consisted of silt and running gravel. The result was a pretty sustainable track that will go the distance under foot traffic.

We constructed a 300 metre long walking track from the upper viewing point carpark down to the river bed, and also a hand built fisherman’s access down a large steep bank that we used river rocks as steps and retaining walls for the edge of the track.

Porter Heights lodge flow track

This project was built on the sub alpine terrain in front of the Porters lodge, the brief was to build a trail that you could pedal to the top and the descent was to be suitable for all levels of riders.

We opted for the cruisy climb that went up and had 3 different options to cut off at different heights onto the flow track. Basically, the higher you went on the climbing track, the more advanced the section of flow track you accessed.

During the construction any vegetation we removed was replanted on the lower batter of the track to hide any sign of the track from the lodge.

The result was a 1.2 km of super flowy track with jumpable features for the experts or rollable for the novices and the best bit was it was completely invisible from the lodge so the views of the mountains for the customers was completely unimpeded.

Mt Hutt bike park climbing trails

Track and Trail has become pretty well known for our super cruisy, but efficient climbing trails.

Over the last few years we have planned the routes and constructed over 8km of climbing trails at the Mt Hutt bike park, making it a popular destination for people who like to earn their turns, the climbs are well placed and make the most of topography to get you to the top of all the good descending trails.

Mostly constructed through gorse, broom and old logging slash the U25 digger with the thumb attachment makes easy work of clearing the path for the trail.

Methven BMX and skills area

This has been a joint effort between Track and Trail and Bike Methven club volunteers, we designed and shaped the bmx and pumptrack, Bike Methven volunteers applied the finishing layer of lime chip.

The BMX track was designed so it was suitable for complete novices as all the big jumps that keep the expert guys entertained are fully pumpable and rollable.

Lake Clearwater – Hakatere

This track was a re-alignment of part of the Te Araroa walking track, it went straight down a fence line off a terrace beside Mt Guy, that route had started to become a large water rut, and was also unsuitable for MTB’s to ride up to get to Mystery lake.

The brief from DOC was that the track was not to be visible from the Huts at Clearwater, we used the specialist ST240 digger to build the ultra-narrow track, any vegetation was replanted on the lower batter to hide any sign of the trail. The result was an almost completely invisible trail.

Jentree Trail – Blenheim

We were asked to build an intermediate trail through some pretty tricky steep and rocky terrain at Justin Leov’s property in Blenheim.

We wanted to make the trail look like it was hand built once it had weathered off so we used the digger to its limits and left a number of rock features on the trail and kept it as narrow as possible.

Now the trail has been there for a number of months it has had the desired effect and section don’t so much look like its machine built.

Craigieburn Dracophylum Climb

The climb at the end of the Dracophylum track had a number of switch backs that were very steep and tight, the were also becoming a problem with rutting out and being wet.

Our brief from DOC was to re-align the corners out so they were more sustainable, but also replant any vegetation removed on the old retired track.

There are a series of before and after tracks to illustrate what we have done.

Ashburton Riverside Trail & Skills Track

The construction of the skills area involved 2 pump tracks of one a novice level and one of a skilled rider level, we also constructed a jump line with 3 levels of jumps for progression. We designed and constructed it from start to finish.

We used a lime chip finish to dress the pump track and jump line to give a durable finish to reduce the amount of maintenance required.

The river track received an up grade in a number of sections getting rid of the flat corners and building some big bermed corners to provide some more flow and enjoyment to the track.

Bridges & Wooden Features

We have built a number of wooden features, steps and bridges. The Akaroa job we built a number of bridges, to get over fences and creeks including the curved one.

The steps are on the Rakaia gorge walk track .

The bridge at Craigieburn was built to DOC engineering specifications as it had to have a load rating of 1.2 ton to carry a small digger for maintenance purposes.

Christchurch Gap Filler Project

The gap filler project was designed as an ‘alternative path’ for commuters, it’s a fusion of a pump track and an old school skate snake run that’s pumpable.

We had a pretty tight time line to get all the base material all shaped up and the top dressing and final shaping done before the Asphalters put the final layer on.

Its proved a massive hit not just with the commuters but the kids also.

Castle Hill – Easy Up Trail

The brief from the Castlehill Trails association and DOC was an easier climb to get up onto the ‘Hogs Back’ trail, as the existing one was more suited to downhill traffic and advanced riders climbing and there was also a good risk of collision between riders and walkers.

We marked the trail to keep within the specified gradient, it was then checked off by DOC to see if there was any significant vegetation that was going to be disturbed during the build. We had one reroute around a patch of ‘Mountain Toatoa’ before building commenced.

The 3km stretch of trail was built at a width of 900mm to minimise disturbance and crossed a number of streams and required a few rock retaining walls to be built.
